[Yancy doesn't really know when he made the decision to go drink his sorrows away literally, except that he just started walking once Raleigh turned his back on him and ended up in one of the bars near the Shatterdome and he claimed one of the stools and hasn't moved since. He's spent more time peeling the labels off his beer bottles than he has actually drinking the beer.
He has a split lip and the beer stings every time he takes a drink and he maybe deserves that.
Part of him wishes he was drunk. If he were drunk, he might go over there and hit on the blonde on the other side of the bar and the thought that being a flirt is what led him to being here in the first place, is maybe the only thing keeping him from doing that just that.
He almost ignores Raleigh all together. Even if he didn't see his brother come in, he felt it, like just proximity makes their heads connect, no pons necessary. Though he doesn't know some of the things that Raleigh's been thinking about him and that's probably a good thing. He already feels like shit, a comparison to their deadbeat dad is just going to make it worse because it's true in a way and he always promised himself he wasn't going to be like Dad. Wasn't going to let his family down like Dad did.
Yancy doesn't look at Raleigh though, just keeps on picking at the label on his beer bottle.]
[ that's probably not the best way to make peace with yancy, but it needs to be said. he's not going to let a bad mood shove him away. especially not after he's been thinking horrible things all day. ]
Look, I'm sorry I made this worse for you. [ he's not sorry about the split lip. yancy kind of deserved that. but he does feel terrible that he pretty much just fed into the guilt trip that was already going strong.
the puppy eyes get cranked up a notch and raleigh gently nudges yancy's shoulder with his own. ] Just come back to the 'Dome with me. I hate seeing you like this, but it's easier to take back home.
You didn't make it worse--and quit looking at me like that. Goddamnit.
[His brother is actually a dog. He's actually part sad puppy and it's cute sometimes but now it's just annoying.
He doesn't want Raleigh apologizing to him and it's really not like Raleigh made him feel any guiltier over all, because it's actually not possible for him to be any more guilty about this. He's maxed out, so if any of the guilt over Alison and Tendo lessens, he's sure that some for Raleigh and letting the kid down will creep in there.]
[ raleigh tilts his head to the side and gives yancy a confused look. ( he is an actual puppy. ) it's not like he doesn't get why yancy would want to steer clear of tendo. he totally does. but it's not really... feasible. ]
So... what? Were you going to try and stay in a motel for however long he and Alison are separated? I don't think you've got the money for that.
[What was Raleigh doing anyway? First he punches him and walks off and now he's what? Trying to make him feel better and that actually makes Yancy want to laugh into his beer because fuck. Of course that's what Raleigh is doing and he doesn't deserve that.]
[ he's expecting that comment to not go over well, given the state he's worked himself into. but it's a reminder that's probably sorely needed. yancy's not the only one at fault here and shouldn't be acting like he is. ]
[Yeah that seems to snap something in his head and he reaches out to grab Raleigh by the collar of his coat and shake him because don't... fucking talk about Alison. Yeah, obviously she had a pretty equal part in this but he doesn't want to blame her. It feels like pointing fingers and she's not his scapegoat.]
[ raleigh doesn't react when he's shaken. he just stares at yancy calmly, one hand come up to wave the bartender away 'cause he's got this. yance isn't going to hurt him. ]
[Yancy's shaking his head and shaking Raleigh again as his answer, because no shit he hasn't apologized. Raleigh was there the entire time that he and Tendo have been in the same room at all day, much less within like a hundred feet of each other. He exhales slowly and lets go of his brother's coat but only so he can reach for his beer.]
I didn't even know he knew until I saw the ring off today.
Then you don't know for sure he's never gonna forgive you.
[ raleigh's not willing to put money on it either way, but this isn't about what he thinks. this is about getting yancy in a state of mind where he can drag him back to the 'dome and hopefully keep him together enough for him to function until things with tendo even out a bit. one way or another. ]
[He's not going back to the Shatterdome just to make Raleigh more comfortable. He's fine right here. He's got his stool and his beer and he promises to keep it in his pants or whatever.]
You're not my keeper, Raleigh. You don't need to keep an eye on me.
[And even if Raleigh was his keeper, he's clearly been doing a shitty job because Yancy betrayed their best friend and slept with his wife. So maybe he's not the best person for the job and maybe Yancy has had too much to drink after all.]
Yancy finishes off his bottle without actually having peeled the entire label off yet and signals for another. Apparently talking about it instead of sitting there and brooding about it speeds up his desire to drink.]
Uh-huh. I'm sure that's what you said the first time you thought about getting into Alison's pants too.
[ if yancy was having any doubts about how angry raleigh really is about all this, that should clear them up. he may feel bad for the dad thoughts, but he still thinks of this as a huge betrayal. and he can't take that lightly, not even for yancy. ]
[Designated walker since the icebox is within walking distance from the bar.
Yancy doesn't actually get the chance to have that next beer. The second that comes out of Raleigh's mouth, he just snaps or the guilt finally drives him insane or whatever you wanna call it but he's reaching out and grabbing Raleigh by the collar again, this time with the express intent of pulling him off of that barstool. Raleigh might stand an inch taller than him when it's all said and done but he's stronger and he can and would kick the little shit's ass the way back to the Shatterdome.
It's not Raleigh's fault that he's in such a shitty place but Raleigh's doing nothing but pushing all of the wrong buttons and making it worse and he's there to take it out on.]
Shut your fucking mouth, Raleigh. Or go home. Those are your options. If you wanted to make me feel shittier than I already do, congrats. You did. Go you.
[ and pulled off the bar stool he is. while raleigh's pretty sure that yancy isn't doesn't going to actually punch him in the face ( yet, anyways ) there's no helping his instinctive shift into a defensive stance, and there's no hiding the mixture of annoyance and hurt on his face. ]
What I wanted was to try and make sure my big brother was going to be okay. But then he was a mopey asshole who decided to push away the one person who would probably tolerate him in all this.
[ he pulls himself away from yancy's grip. option one, keeping his fucking mouth shut, isn't an acceptable option. so home it is. ]
I love you, bro. But until you stop being an jagoff who's trying to punish himself, [ did you think he wouldn't notice that? ] I'm gone.
[ he realizes, as he turns and walks away, that this is probably what yancy wants in a twisted way. if he really wants to sulk and make himself hurt because of what he did, giving his brother and co-pilot a shut up or get out ultimatum was probably a good way to do it. but raleigh's too angry to care right now. in the morning, though? he'll be stuck to yancy like glue. ]
