[ when raleigh actually goes to call naomi, his brother gives him a look and pulls the mother hen routine. she's a jaeger fly, bro. don't go there, he'd said. but raleigh was feeling a little rebellious and she had been really pretty, so he calls her anyways. they go on a date and she's is totally not a jaeger fly.
at least, not in the way yancy was thinking. yeah, she was maybe a little starstruck by jaeger pilots in general, but naomi's a pretty down to earth girl. she just got into a local college, is going to be studying journalism. and, wow, raleigh could sit and watch her talk about journalism all day. he's got no real interest in it, but the way her face lights up when she talks about it is really great. he drives her home from dinner and a walk that night and leaves her with a soft kiss on the lips. when she says yes to a second date a few days later, raleigh thinks he's hit the jackpot.
they sort of become boyfriend and girlfriend. sort of because raleigh's eighteen and he's never really had a real girlfriend. there was gabi at the international school, a pretty french girl who taught him how to kiss and let him get to second base but that--that wasn't anything like a relationship. she probably would've chewed raleigh up and spat him out if they hadn't moved back to the states. there was another girl when he was sixteen and in high school. raleigh was pretty gone on her and they went on one date. ended up at the local make-out spot and had sex in the back of her van. it was pretty awful sex and the next day at school she told him she wasn't really interested in a second date. broke his heart, she did.
so this whole thing with naomi is new and special and great and raleigh feels really kind of stupid sometimes but... she makes him happy. even as she makes him nervous and flushed sometimes.
they learn each other slowly. they kiss and explore each other in increments. naomi tells him all about her dreams and the articles she's writing for a blog. raleigh tells her all about the mark 3 jaeger that's being built, and the way his brother is really everything to him now. she doesn't get it, but she smiles at him and doesn't judge his odd codependency. raleigh's pretty sure that's what makes yancy finally approve of her.
the day he's assigned gipsy, they go out and celebrate. somehow, they end up tumbling into bed at a motel and it's--it's really, really great. he falls asleep with naomi in his arms and wakes up spooning her. that's the first time he thinks that he really might be in love with her.
according to the old clock on the nightstand, it's almost nine am. which, unfortunately, means raleigh should head back to the shatterdome relatively soon. or at least give yancy a call. either of those options means he needs to wake naomi up, which seems such a shame. she looks so peaceful when she's asleep.
ever so carefully, raleigh brushes her hair back and drops a kiss on her shoulder. then the join of her shoulder and neck. the spot right behind her ear. ] Naomi... [ his voice is a sleepy rumble in her ear. ] 'S time to wake up, beautiful.

asdlkhasdfklhsdf no but i am happy because this is so cute
[ it's a week after she writes her number on raleigh becket's hand that he finally calls her just as she's finished crying a round at her older sister, who brushes her hair back from her face and notices that something's up with her phone, holding it up to say: --oh look. see, i told you not to stress yourself out.
so naomi takes the call and locks herself in her room, and raleigh becket asks her out on a date.
he's goofy and cute and he lets her babble about the things she likes ( there's a television screen at the restaurant he's taken her to and she can't help but notice the segment on the news, which prompts her to comment and when he asks her to expound, she goes on talking about ten minutes straight until she realizes she's all but told him enough for the paper that's due next week sorry, i get caught up in it - no, it's okay. i've never really thought too much about stuff like that, it's interesting. keep talking. ) and doesn't think she's weird.
by the time he drives her home, walks her to the door and leans in to give her what is essentially her first kiss - she's already red in the face because what if he doesn't want to see her again?
but raleigh does, because he asks if he can see her again, and if she presses her mouth to his with a murmured yes, it's a mix of how he's so boyishly attractive and the way he's actually smarter than he gives himself credit for and while her crush on him might have been superficial at first, he's on his way to be a jaeger pilot and she's heard that making the cut is really rare.
they start dating - as much as two people can date when she has college to figure out and he's going through jaeger training with his really intimidating brother all the way in kodiak island. but they make it work and on some weekends she drops by, happy enough to get him for even just five minutes because while they talk on the phone and he texts her the silliest things, she misses him a lot because there's nothing quute like seeing him in person.
so her sister drives her up tonthe jaeger academy and waits in the car as naomi stands outside the facility gate. and when raleigh steps out with his brother trailing behind him, she walks up to where they cheesily link hands through the fence before he finally rushes out to lift her up in his arms.
she knows she's in trouble, because they're only really just kids, but it's like that sara bareilles song because naomi could definitely live by the light in raleigh's eyes.
it's not a hardship when she realizes that jaeger pilots, up close, don't act like regular people, because when she hangs out with raleigh and his brother and a j-tech officer named tendo from the ppdc, she sees how the girls go from interested to weirded out when the beckets finish each other's sentences, or how they know what each other needs without saying a word, or even how sometimes raleigh answers to someone calling out yancy's name. for a moment she's just quiet, just watching these things unfold, and when mr. choi asks her if it bothers her, that her boyfriend's practically an extension of his brother and vice-versa - and she shakes her head to say: of course not. look at them. the way they are? the kaiju have another thing coming if they think they can beat those boys.
she's so incredibly proud of raleigh when he calls her to crow that he and his brother have been assigned to a beautiful new mark 3 jaeger, she's in the hallway outside of her classroom and she's grinning like a loon because her boyfriend's big dream just came true. you get to name her, right? yeah, babe. i picked out the best name - gipsy danger. for the world war 2 engine, right? yeah, that one.
they're in a motel room that night celebrating when she lets him get to third base, and somewhere between kissing and touching they both somehow end up going all the way. she's never had anyone before him, but she knows what she likes and when they come together it's flirting and talking and egging each other on, laughter as their bodies slide together and sleepy kisses between the sheets.
she's hazy in the morning and there's too much sun, and when his lips press against her shoulder she blinks an eye to glare at the clock. ]
Do you have to go already? [ she whines, and she rolls over to bury her face in his chest. ]
Not for a little while yet. [ he wraps his arm around her again and kisses the top of her head. ] But I didn't want to wake you up and run.
[ it seemed like a dick move. plus, this way he gets to hold her in his arms a little while longer. that's a pretty great thing. hell, this whole morning is a pretty great thing. it's a little scary to think about, especially considering they're, what? nineteen and eighteen? but raleigh feels like he could really get used to this whole thing.
not necessarily the sneaking off to a motel to spend the night with her ( though that was pretty fucking awesome, pun intended ) but just--being with her. he misses her when they're away from each other and all they can do is call, text, and skype. ( yancy gives him shit for looking completely moonstruck whenever he gets a text message from her, but he doesn't know anything, okay. he really doesn't. or else he'd be finding himself an actual girlfriend instead of just being the class act he is. ) having her around to touch, to hold... it's really, really nice. maybe he'll get to have a little more of that now that he's going to be transferred to anchorage and she's already going to school there.
or he hopes he will, anyways. ]
Maybe we can get breakfast before you and Kara have to leave.
[ at the mention of breakfast she hums and falls back against the sheets, one arm coming up to catch a hand at his neck so she can pull him back down against her.
she doesn't feel like she's just eighteen. she feels utterly amazing and happy and she's going to tell it straight to her older sister's face that they were good and responsible and they definitely didn't need the lube and kara will swear at her and call her a little minx but does naomi care? nope. she wasn't on the pill for months for nothing. ]
Pancakes, [ she catches his lower lip, already sad that he's due to go in a few hours. she'd never figured herself the type to fall into something that is technically long-distance, but stranger things have happened. ] I think there's an IHOP close by. Or we could just grab something from Mickey D's and come back?
this is probably the most stereotypical thing ever BUT W/E THEY'RE YUMMY so i'm rolling w/ it
[ man, she really doesn't give him good choices, does she? ihop isn't terrible and he could probably go for a belgian waffle if they ended up there. but that means he can't come back to the motel with her and maybe end up having a little more fun before they need to part ways. on the other hand, mcdonald's breakfasts aren't his favorite thing in the world. so he's kind of stuck choosing between one unappealing option and another. unless he happens to give her a third.
he twists to look over his shoulder and--yep. there's a little stove in the kitchenette. he grins and leans down to kiss naomi again. ] I vote we stop by the grocery store down the street and then I'll make you pancakes. Or crêpes like my mom used to make sometimes. But it's up to you.
[ she has crappy choices because it never crossed her mind thay raleigh could cook and the most she can manage is a spam and tomato omelette -- which is not impressive. and she was also thinking of not wandering too far from the motel. but when he suggests going to the grocery so that he can make her pancakes and crêpes ( oh my god, raleigh are you kidding? crêpes ) she might be a little bit starry-eyed.
because as if total sweetheart and badass jaeger pilot wasn't already a lot -- raleigh cooks.
naomi's definitely smiling as she answers the way his lips press against hers, and her fingers twine around the dog tags hanging from his neck. ] You're full of surprises, you know that?
[ to be fair, raleigh can cook a total of three things: crêpes, scrambled eggs, and pb&j. if he's having a good day, he can maybe do a box of kraft macaroni and cheese, but most of the time he forgets that he's got something on the stove until it's a disaster. the only reason he can even cook crêpes is because he'd made his mom show him how about sixty billion times until he could almost do it in his sleep.
but any thoughts of breakfast and whether the local grocery store will actually have nutella go flying out into space when her fingers wrap around his dog tags because--oh. that's really kind of hot. he'd never really thought about something like that being hot but it kind of is.
raleigh leans down and kisses naomi's collarbone. just because he wants to and he can. ] Life's no fun without surprises. [ and they should probably get out of bed soon otherwise he's going to get distracted by the way the skin of her hip feels under his palms and the fact that he's actually allowed to kiss her wherever he wants to now. ]
[ staying in bed isn't such a bad idea really, especially since naomi figures she won't see him again for months and now that they've crossed that bridge, it's like she has permission to touch him as much as she wants.
but. she's actually hungry, and her stomach interrupts them to say just as much ( god, mood ruiner body, why, you weren't complaining last night ) and so naomi darts three kisses along raleigh's shoulder, neck and ear before she slips out of bed, trying to not be shy about her state of undress, even if it's morning now and she suddenly is and wow, raleigh, how are you really-- okay nevermind. ]
Kara gave me extra cash. You want anything else other than crepes, babe? [ she ducks into the bathroom and tries to make it casual but she's pretty such the way she'd openly stared at him for a minute there ruined any attempt at looking mature and sophisticated. ]
[ naomi's stomach growls, and raleigh lets out a frustrated groan. what a mood killer. the way she looks at him is really pretty awesome, though. and there's no real hiding the way he's totally checking her out as she ducks into the bathroom. ]
Is you a valid option? [ ... he hopes that actually sounds smooth and not corny like he's thinking the second it comes out of his mouth.
he sits up a little, leaning back against the pillows and the headboard. he should probably get up and get dressed eventually. but he's kind of hoping that if he just stays naked he'll have a better chance of getting laid again after breakfast. ] What time are you and Kara leaving?
[ she's bunching her hair at the top of her head and turning the tap so that she can brush her teeth when raleigh's question floats towards her from the room. she doesn't answer, just grins and proceeds to clean her teeth, but not before tossing a quick: ] Not until about four this afternoon?
[ plenty of time for cuddling and whatever else raleigh might want if he has a couple more hours to spare before he goes off to meet his brother. ]
Cool. [ forget just heading back to the shatterdome. he leans over and grabs his phone, shooting off a quick text to yancy. ( naomi's not leaving til 4. be back then ) there were things they were maybe going to do today. like spar and maybe start packing up their dorm. but that can wait a few hours, right? right.
that done, he gets out of bed and starts gathering up his clothes so he can get dressed. except there's just one problem. he can't find his boxers. ] Oh, this just figures. [ yeah, that was no muttered in english. ]
[ it's a quick brush ( they're going to eat breakfast, she can do a more thorough clean + mouthwash later ) just to freshen up, and she pulls on the spare undies she keeps tucked in the side pocket of her toiletries case.
by the time raleigh finishes texting and is gathering his clothes, naomi's actually leaning against the doorway and enjoying the view of his tiny butt, arms crossed casually over her still bare breasts because she's pretty sure her bra got kicked under the bed.
her brow quirks though, when he mutters something she doesn't understand. ] What?
[ it's so commonplace to mingle french and english when he's somewhere he's comfortable, that he doesn't realize he's done it until he repeats what he just said a little louder. and then adds a, ] I can't find my boxers, [ in english as he drops to the floor to look under the bed.
oh, hey. there's her bra. raleigh grabs it and tosses it on top of the mattress. aaaand--oh, there's his boxers. ] Ha!
[ is that... french? naomi's not so sure but there's something about the sound of it that makes her think it might be and-- wow, if raleigh speaks french that is... kind of... really hot.
dammit.
she wanders over to the bed and fishes her bra up by the strap before sitting down, a smile playing on her face when she hears him exclaim triumphantly. ] You're such a dork. [ she grins and slips the thing on, straps up on her shoulders, adjusts the underwire beneath her breasts and reaches behind to get the clasps right ( she'd do it another way, but her boyfriend is in the room and she's got enough vanity to want to try to make the whole process look pretty for him okok )
--except it is harder than it looks and she can't seem to get the damn thing to take. ]
Yeah, but you like that I'm a dork. [ or at least he hopes that she does. if she doesn't, why on earth is she with him?
raleigh stands up to pull on his boxers and finds himself staring at naomi. he tries not to, since she's obviously having a little trouble. but she just looks so cute, fighting with her bra. he can't help it, the same way he can't help but smile. ] Here, let me. [ he sits behind her on the bed and clasps her bra for her. it's a lot easier from this side. ]
And here I thought guys were the only ones to have trouble with these things.
[ it's a good thing that he can't see her face right now because she just might be a little pink.
when she finally does turn to look at him though, naomi scrunches her nose up before winding her arms around his torso because his hands on her back had sent shivers up her spine. ] Only because I was putting it on the hard way. [ let him wonder about that... or... something. whatever.
she nips at at his chest playfully. ] So. Are we going grocery shopping?
[ he almost asks there's a hard way to put on a bra? but then he's distracted by her arms around him and her teeth on his chest. ]
Not if you keep doing that we're not. [ it's half a joke and half a warning. he's so wrapped up in her right now and the way that it's okay for him to hold her like this--skin to skin with hardly anything between them. it would be much too easy for him to completely forget about breakfast and just kiss her until the end of the world. ]
[ yes, there is, when you try to look cute for your boyfriend. the easier way is less flattering. that's the logic she's sticking with at least. ]
But you said you'd make crepes. [ naomi winces when she hears herself say the words, a quiet oh god, get a grip, sokolov crossing her thoughts before she kisses him quick on his jaw and pulls away to grab her shirt, which is balled up and wedged between the edge of the bed and the nightstand.
[ if she hadn't darted away so quickly, he would've said, i can make crepes later. as it is, he just falls backwards onto the bed with an exaggerated groan, hands covering his face. ]
You're killing me here, Meems. [ he's totally not serious about that, but--it's nice. to be able to joke about things like that. this whole morning is just really nice.
but if they're going to go grocery shopping, he should probably finish getting dressed. ] Your jeans are by the TV. Have you seen my pants anywhere?
have i ever told you how much i love adorable, fumbling teen romances
at least, not in the way yancy was thinking. yeah, she was maybe a little starstruck by jaeger pilots in general, but naomi's a pretty down to earth girl. she just got into a local college, is going to be studying journalism. and, wow, raleigh could sit and watch her talk about journalism all day. he's got no real interest in it, but the way her face lights up when she talks about it is really great. he drives her home from dinner and a walk that night and leaves her with a soft kiss on the lips. when she says yes to a second date a few days later, raleigh thinks he's hit the jackpot.
